ATBC2025 Field Course

Join this exclusive field course and seize the opportunity to explore two key areas of tropical ecology while developing practical skills in conservation techniques.

Deadline for applications:

June 6th, 2025

Tropical Ecology: Field Botany and Camera Trapping
Date:
June 26–29, 2025
Location: San Juan Juquila Vijanos, Villa Alta, Oaxaca, Mexico

Instructors: Paul Fine (University of California, Berkeley) , Onja Razafindratsima (University of California, Berkeley), Sabine Cudney-Valenzuela (University of California, Berkeley), and Reyna Domínguez (National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM)

This intensive field course will focus on two main topics:

  1. Field botany and ecology, including plant identification, specimen preparation, and sampling using transects.

  2. Camera trapping, covering camera installation, data analysis, and its application in conservation biology.

The course is open to 25 students, primarily upper-level undergraduate and graduate students from Mexico and other Latin American countries. Instruction will be mainly in Spanish, but a basic understanding of English will be helpful.

The course will be held in San Juan Juquila Vijanos, in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca. Fieldwork will take place in tropical montane cloud forests, comparing shaded coffee agroecosystems and unmanaged forests. This unique forest type harbors high biodiversity due to the convergence of Nearctic and Neotropical flora and fauna.

Thanks to the support of Wiley and the British Ecological Society, the course will cover round-trip land transportation from Oaxaca City to the course location, lodging and meals during the course, and, if needed, registration for the ATBC2025 Conference.
