The Epiphyte Inventory Group goes global: the importance of epiphytes to understand tropical diversity.

Maria Carmona Higuita, Glenda Mendieta Leiva

Epiphytes, plants that live on other plants without parasitising them, are critical components of tropical ecosystems. They fulfil important ecological functions and contribute to amplifying biodiversity. However, despite their ecological importance, epiphytes are often overlooked in broader studies of tropical diversity. This session introduces the Epiphyte Inventory Group (EpIG), a global initiative that seeks to enhance our understanding of these fascinating plants and their role in understanding tropical diversity.

The session will explore the goals and objectives of EpIG, which include creating a comprehensive, global database of epiphyte species, using it to advance research on better understanding their biogeography, biodiversity, and conservation; as well as fostering collaboration among scientists across the globe. Through these efforts, the group aims to fill important knowledge gaps and underscore the significance of epiphytes in maintaining tropical biodiversity.

Participants will gain insights into:

What is the Epiphyte Inventory Group?
Scope and framework.
Current projects.
Research achievements.
Long-term vision and upcoming initiatives.
How to engage in EpIG?

This session is relevant to a broad audience, from tropical ecologists and taxonomists to conservationists and anyone interested in the intricate workings of tropical biodiversity. The continental perspective of the Epiphyte Inventory Group offers a unique opportunity for attendees to learn about epiphyte research from different regions in the Neotropics and discuss collaborative efforts to address questions in common.
